On September 28, 2025, Most Ven. Jinwoo, the president of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, celebrated the third anniversary of his inauguration. The first president to be elected unanimously since the Order's reform in 1994, he has consistently delivered tangible results each year, fully meeting public expectations. Under the slogan ‘Trusted Buddhism, Respected Buddhism, Shared Buddhism,’ he has laid the foundation for the renaissance of Buddhism in Korea. In particular, he has set an exemplary standard for Buddhists and the public alike by performing 108 prostrations every single day since his inauguration. While establishing the identity of the Jogye Order as a religious community dedicated to spiritual practice, he has engaged with society in a way that has brought about remarkable changes both within and beyond Korean Buddhism.
The slogan “Propagation is the only way for Buddhism to survive amidst the global decline in religious adherents” has become his hwadu (critical phrase), or religious mantra, creating a new trend of ‘hip’ Buddhism. Notably, the International Buddhist Expo hosted by the Jogye Order received an overwhelming response from the younger generation. Furthermore, to increase contact with the youth, diverse content was introduced to lower entry barriers and allow people to become naturally exposed to the Buddha's teachings. Consequently, even amid growing religious indifference and secularization, the public is viewing Buddhism more and more favorably.
Seon meditation is the foremost bridge connecting Buddhism and modern people. At the Buddhist Grand Dharma Assembly held as part of the 2024 International Seon Meditation Summit, Most Ven. Jinwoo demonstrated how to find peace of mind to the audience right in the heart of Gwanghwamun Square. In October of the same year, he visited the UN Headquarters in the United States to deliver a letter signed by meditation experts from home and abroad, expressing the aspiration for the designation of a World Meditation Day. The popularization of Seon meditation has become an opportunity for ordinary people to approach Buddhism with greater ease.
Most Ven. Jinwoo also spearheaded improvements to national systems related to traditional culture, significantly elevating the status of Buddhism in Korea. His most notable achievement was abolishing admission fees for national heritage temples in 2023, one year after his inauguration. As a result, the Jogye Order opened wide the gates of 64 temples that hold important national cultural heritage, thereby enhancing the public's right to cultural enjoyment. He also laid the foundation for transmitting traditional culture inheritance to future generations by facilitating the revision of various national laws, including resolving legal issues related to the comprehensive real estate taxes and electricity fees.
Internally, he has implemented a major reorganization of the central administrative body of the Jogye Order, establishing a young and dynamic system. He also showed great care for the socially vulnerable, often rushing to the scenes of tragedy such as the Jeju Air crash and the Halloween crush in Itaewon, to comfort bereaved families and victims.
Remarkable changes, born from the power of practice, unfolded everywhere. Under the leadership of Most Ven. Jinwoo, it is expected that the policies for future generations will reach a new level of refinement with the newly revived Buddhism. The establishment of a central support center for the globalization of Seon meditation is now within sight. A comprehensive Dharma propagation system encompassing children, youth, middle-aged adults, and the elderly is also being developed. Support activities for the vulnerable will be further strengthened, in prayer for a world free of discrimination.
