On September 24, Most Ven. Jinwoo, the president of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, presented letters of appointment to the 24 members of the 8th Reconciliation and Unity Committee at Hamwol Hall, Jingwansa Temple in Seoul. He emphasized that Buddhism must engage with the citizens of Korea in order to resolve the widespread conflicts permeating various areas of society.

The Reconciliation and Unity Committee, established in 2010 by the Jogye Order and currently chaired by Ven. Jeongman, is a mediation and arbitration body that aims to resolve social conflicts and promote harmony within the Order. The Committee proposes solutions based on the principle of 'reconciling and harmonising', which seeks to rise above disputes caused by differences in class, region, and religion.

“The Buddha taught that just as rivers flowing in different directions ultimately unite in the sea, all disputes and conflicts can also be reconciled within the great ocean of truth,” said Most Ven. Jinwoo, addressing the committee members who serve as a bridge between the Jogye Order and society, adopting the perspective of the Middle Way and Right View. He emphasized that, “Reconciliation is not just about stopping conflict; rather, it is the Buddha's compassionate way of transforming the flames of opposition into lamps of wisdom, leading to greater harmony and enlightenment.”

He expressed his hope, saying: “It is like a lamp illuminating a dark night-time path. May conflicts subside wherever your hands reach and flowers of harmony and hope bloom.”
