The World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB) held its 31st General Conference under the theme “Cultivating Wisdom and Well-being in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: A Buddhist Vision for the Future,” to mark its 75th anniversary and explore a new vision for the international Buddhist network.
Held in Bangkok, Thailand, from December 5 to 7, the conference brought together over 200 delegates from more than 20 countries, including Korea, China, Japan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, to discuss the role of Buddhism in the AI era and strategies for international cooperation. The Korean Buddhist delegation was represented by Ven. Seonil, Director of the Social Affairs Office, and Ven. Munjong, Head of the International Dharma Propagation Corps, on behalf of Most Ven. The WFB 31st General Conference included a symposium, project reports, a standing committee meeting, and a commemorative ceremony for the 75th anniversary of the WFB’s founding. Notably, Somdet Maha Thirachan, Thailand's highest-ranking monastic, who had visited Most Ven. Jinwoo last year in Korea, graced the celebration, adding significance to the event. Representatives from participating countries discussed the ethical and spiritual guidance that Buddhism can provide amid the rapid growth of AI technology and sought a unified response.
“Korean Buddhism will officially launch the WFB Korea Committee alongside the UN World Meditation Day commemoration event on December 21st,” said Most Ven. Jinwoo in his congratulatory address, expressing Korean Buddhism's strong commitment to international cooperation. He emphasized, “We will fulfill our responsibility to ensure Buddhism becomes a beacon of wisdom illuminating humanity's future through deeper cooperation with the WFB,” adding, “I pray this General Conference, which marks the 75th anniversary of the WFB's establishment, will be a new leap forward in its development.”
